What is the difference between POP3, IMAP, and SMTP?
| POP3 and IMAP are different protocols that you can use to check your email. SMTP is the protocol used to send email. When using POP3, email is downloaded to your computer so that it can be read later. Any folders you create will all be stored locally on your computer. When you access webmail, emails you have downloaded will not be available unless you have enabled the option to leave a copy of messages on the server. POP3 uses port 110 for incoming email. When using IMAP, your computer connects to the server throughout the email transaction and stores all email on the server. You can use multiple computers to check your email, and all folders created will be stored on the server. Full emails and attachments will only be downloaded when they are opened. IMAP uses port 143 SMTP is the protocol used for sending email. It is used with both POP3 and IMAP. SMTP uses port 25. Please note, some ISP's have begun disabling access to port 25. If your ISP is blocking this port, please use port 26 for your outgoing server. If your ISP also blocks port 26, then you will need to use your ISP's outgoing email server. |
